True to the original
The world, monsters, items and rules are rebuilt piece by piece from observed behaviour, and run on your own copy of the game. The goal is the game you remember — not an approximation.

Why D2RUST
D2RUST recreates Lord of Destruction from the ground up in Rust. No Blizzard code, no bundled game data — just a new engine that reads the files from your own copy of the game.
The world, monsters, items and rules are rebuilt piece by piece from observed behaviour, and run on your own copy of the game. The goal is the game you remember — not an approximation.
Even single player runs as a local, in-process server. The client sends intents and renders state; the simulation decides the outcome. It is the foundation for online play.
The D2RUST launcher finds your Diablo II folder, starts the game, and keeps the game and itself up to date.
The D2RUST code is MIT licensed; Blizzard's assets and game files are not covered by that licence. Read every line, build it yourself, or help shape it on GitHub.
Beta 0.1 — single-player today
Online multiplayer is next; mod channels are planned.
D2RUST ships no Blizzard code, art or game data. You need your own, legally owned copy of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (1.14d). Your original install is never modified.
Built in the open
D2RUST is developed in public. The D2RUST code is MIT licensed; Blizzard's assets and game files are not covered by that licence. Browse the code, follow the work, or build the game yourself.
